Ramat Aviv Medical Center Gastroenterology Unit performs the following tests:

Gastroscopy test 

Gastroscopy testing aims to diagnose inflammatory illness, ulcers, benign and malignant tumors, and the Helicobacter Pylori virus.

Test procedure

After administering local anesthesia, a fine flexible tube outfitted with a camera is inserted via the mouth and reaches the stomach and duodenum, allowing the physician to view them and the diaphragm directly.

The test lasts 5 minutes. Following the test we recommend not driving for 24 hours.

Results and recovery

If the H. Pylori virus is found, results are given immediately. Treatment is recommended according to findings. Post-treatment recovery tends to be fast.

Colonoscopy

Purpose of the test

A colonoscopy is conducted to view and treat large intestine issues. the test helps early discovery of polyps, malignant tumors, inflammation, and other causes of bleeding and chronic stomach pain.

The test is suited to patients in high risk groups for hereditary intestinal cancer, including first degree relatives who have been diagnosed with intestinal tumors. The test is also suited to people complaining of rectal bleeding, stomach pains, sudden weight loss, anemia, or changes in bowel movements.

Test procedure

In most cases a sedative injection is administered prior to the test. We recommend bringing someone to accompany you. Driving is prohibited for 24 hours after receiving the injection.

A fine flexible tube outfitted with a camera is then introduced via the rectum. The camera displays the internal structure of the large and small intestines or the diaphragm onto the screen, in accordance with the type of test.

Results and recovery

The patient may experience discomfort or stomach pain after the test, due to air entering the stomach cavity as the test is being conducted. Should the physician decide to take a biopsy for further testing at a certified laboratory, this will also be done during the test. 

Some 6% of men and women may develop intestinal cancer. It is currently normative, based on the literature, to suggest a colonoscopy to people aged 50 and up even of no clear symptoms or hereditary tendencies are known.

Sigmoidoscopy 

Purpose of the test

A sigmoidoscopy is an endoscopic test to examine the lower digestive system in order to prevent large intestine cancer or diagnose it as early as possible. Using a short colonoscope, the section of intestine closest to the rectum and known as the sigmoid colon is examined. 

The test is conducted with cutting edge equipment and intended chiefly for patients in the high risk groups for developing large intestine cancer due to hereditary connects (first level relatives diagnosed with this cancer) or other hereditary reasons. The test is also useful for individuals who experience rectal bleeding, chronic stomach pain or changes in bowel movements.

The test procedure

In most cases a sedative injection is given prior to testing, following which a fine, flexible tube outfitted with a camera is inserted. The camera allows the physician to view the internal structure of the intestine or diaphragm, according to the type of test needed.

Due to the sedative administered before testing, we recommend bringing someone to accompany you. Driving is absolutely prohibited for 24 hours after the test.

Results and recovery

Patients may experience discomfort or stomach pain due to air entering the stomach during the test.

If the physician decides on taking a biopsy this will be done during the test and sent to the appropriate laboratory for diagnosis.

Small intestine testing with the video pill

Purpose of the test

Discovery and diagnosis of bleeding and tumors in the small intestine and evaluation of intestinal functioning in chronic digestive illnesses.

Up until now it was difficult to diagnose bleeding and tumors using existing equipment. This required patients to undergo a surgical procedure. Now the video pill allows scanning the small intestine and finding tumors or sources of bleeding.

The test procedure

The pill contains a miniscule camera, light and battery. Easily swallowed, it moves into the digestive system completely naturally. It takes several hours to capture the full film. Every second, the camera takes two color photos. The patient is outfitted with a belt holding a wireless receiver with sensors which record the information broadcast by the pill. The procedure ends when the pill is naturally expelled by the body.

Data is analyzed using a computer program, and translated into a video. Patients can continue their normal routines.
